If you have Rx Savings Solutions (RxSS) through your employer or health plan, a simple search in the RxSS app can tell you a lot about a medication: 

• Whether it is covered by your insurance 

• What you pay out-of-pocket (at different pharmacies) 

• If clinical alternatives or other lower-cost options exist 

Millions of RxSS members have access to the search feature. That means search trends can tell us a lot about pharmacy consumers. Think back to the past year. Which medications do you think members searched for most?  

Here are the Top 3 in 2024, by category¹:  

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):

ADHD drugs accounted for 22% of all searches.² Leading the way were searches for generic Adderall® and Vyvanse®. Both were removed from the FDA Shortage Database late in 2024. However, ongoing shortages for these and other generics in the category are still common. 

Clearly, many patients (and parents) continued looking for more affordable ADHD medications and pharmacies that could supply them.  

GLP-1s:

Type 2 diabetes and weight-loss medications like Ozempic®, Zepbound®, Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® had the most unique search counts and were 20% of total searched drugs³. Search volume was similar in 2023 when GLP-1 prescriptions began to surge. However, it may also indicate that more plans provided coverage for weight-loss drugs than in the previous year but only covered one product.

More people are getting prescriptions for these expensive medications and might be looking for more affordable options. 

Cardiovascular:

According to the CDC, heart disease is still the number one cause of death and disability in the United States.⁴ Medications for these conditions made up roughly 11% of total search volume. Lisinopril, the most prescribed generic cardiac medication, was the top search-getter.⁵  

Despite many generic medications available for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, members may be looking for alternatives that bring even more savings as food prices continue to squeeze household budgets.  

Who knows what the top searches will be this year. Remember, the search tool works just as well for well-known medications or ones you have never heard of. Either way, the same valuable information is there for you in the RxSS app.
